Consult with Professor Levon Blue (UQ)

23rd Jan 2025

As part of building meaningful financial literacy programs, we consulted with Professor Levon Blue, a leading researcher and practitioner with experience in both Canada and Australia. Her insights highlighted the importance of tailoring education to community needs rather than assuming a “one-size-fits-all” approach.

From her background growing up Indigenous in Canada, Professor Blue reminded us how systemic and geographic barriers—such as isolation during winter—shape people’s financial realities. She also shared her professional experience training individuals in budgeting and supporting schools to manage funds effectively.

In our discussion, she stressed that financial literacy must be age-appropriate, practical, and engaging: younger students benefit from learning about payslips and taxation, while older students need guidance on loans, budgeting, and financial products. For First Nations communities in Australia, she emphasised co-design with youth, using social media and direct engagement to make programs relevant.

Together, we identified focus areas for our future work, including:

  • Responsible use of modern tools like buy now/pay later services

  • Scam and cryptocurrency awareness

  • Access to scholarships, grants, and informed decisions about campus living

We are excited to continue this collaboration, with Professor Blue interested in leading a workshop with us in early 2025.
